Ready… Set… Go! The Tiger Battalion staff didn’t miss a beat starting this school year…a heartbeat that is.

August 13 was the American Heart Association’s 18th Annual Heart Walk. The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The Heart Walk encourages others to take steps to living a stronger, healthier life. The Oahu Heart Walk offers two routes, including a 1-mile survivor route around Kapiolani Park and a 4.5 mile route around Diamond Head Walk. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are Hawaii’s two leading causes of death.

The goal was to raise $550,000, and the walk managed to raise over $561,000. More than 5,000 Oahu residents participated in our local Heart Walk at Kapiolani Park.

The Tiger Battalion staff always start the year off by volunteering at the Heart Walk. “I almost got a frostbite from putting my arms in the ice water, but it was worth it” said Rachel Williams, JROTC Communications Technology Officer. Volunteering at the Heart Walk was a chance for the Tiger Battalion staff members to get to know each other, and work as a team. Other cadets were able to come, and help pass out water to those who crossed the finish line. “It was nice passing out water to people ,and Subway gave us free sandwiches at the end” said Dezmar Martin, Command Sergeants Major.

The Tiger Battalion, with the assistance of Pohokela, will conduct McKinley’s Going Green Recycling Day on September 17. They assisted the people of Hawaii getting healthy at the heart walk, and now they want to help the earth get healthy by recycling.
