Mixed Media Madness: Art Blocks

Kelly Cheng, reporter

I hate  running out of ideas about what to draw. It makes me lose motivation. If you’re like me, this is irritating, so I want to share tips that I do to avoid art blocks. My first tip is to redraw your old artwork. Compare and see if you improved. Also, if you have unfinished drawings, try motivating yourself to finish it! Second, look at references or be inspired by other people’s art. This usually gives me a broad idea of what I may want to draw. The third tip is to draw out of your comfort zone. In addition to references, many artists create art in many different styles. It helps to expose yourself to many different styles. For example, if you happen to do humans/anatomy a lot, experiment with different body languages or facial expressions. If you enjoy scenery, try landscape art. My last tip is to draw squiggly lines or shapes and from there, make something out of it. I know this sounds silly but it’s a nice exercise for your mind and you never know what you can create. I hope these tips help you as much as they help me.
