Star-Advertiser columnist talks to budding journalists

Columnist Mike Tsai visited MHS and talked to the reporters of The Pinion.

Tsai said he became a columnist because it was a good way to express opinions. The job allows him to meet different types of people and the communication often brings him interesting stories and ideas.

He always researches the person he’s going to interview or finds other facts to maximize the time spent during the interview. The hard work can prevent a waste of time and can make the interview easier.

Tsai has had many writing  jobs. He now writes for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. His column “Incidental Lives” runs at Tuesdays.

At first he was nervous before interviews, but he just pushed himself towards the troubles and calmed down. With his basic writing skills and insightful thoughts, Tsai  has gained many achievements. Due to his job, he has also traveled to many countries.

He also said that descriptive words take the readers back to the scene, show them the action and lead their imagination.

Passage you write should be objective. He said that is difficult because people are not objects. What the writers should do is trying to be fair to all and follow the ethics of journalism.
