Solo Leveling Review
March 9, 2020
Solo Leveling started as a web novel written by Chu-Gong which has 270 chapters and 14 volumes. It was later turned into a webtoon or a manhwa (Korean comic) by illustrator Hyeon Gun and Jung Sak-Rak.
The story is really good. It goes something like this. The Gate connected the real world with the monster world. These monsters reside in these “dungeons” since there are no exits. However, the exit opens after 7 days if not cleared, these cases are called “dungeon break”. Ordinary people are given powers (also called awakened) to slain these monsters are called “hunters”. Every dungeon and every hunter receives a ranking on how strong the hunter is or how strong the dungeon is. The main character is Sung Jin-Woo who is E rank (E is the lowest and S is the highest). He is called the world’s weakest hunter since he always gets hurt even in low tier dungeons where no one usually gets hurt. He risks his life for the sake of paying his sister’s college fees and mother’s medical bill who contracted a deadly disease that put her into a coma. One day, he found a hidden dungeon in a D rank dungeon which almost got him killed. When he woke up, he got powers similar to a game, and every time he did a quest, he levels up and gets stronger going from the weakest hunter to possibly the strongest hunter. I would rate the story 5/5 as while reading it, I never once got bored and uninterested in the story.
One reason why Solo Leveling is such a popular webtoon is because of its amazing art. The art style uses a black and blue color scheme. The art is so detailed and just gives you goosebumps every time you read it. I would rate the art 5/5. Since one of it’s genres besides fantasy, is action. The action is so amazing with the fight scenes just looks amazing and it is also so detailed.
Let’s talk about the characters. A lot of the characters in Solo Leveling have a background that the author makes known to us. Even if the character isn’t likable, they are important to the story since they make Jin-Woo stronger. For example, one not likable character is Hwang Dong-Suk who is a lizard or a person that leaves one of the weaker party members to die and steal their loot. He technically made Jin-Woo stronger since he allowed Jin-Woo to pass his limit and killed the floor boss by himself making him gain a mass amount of experience points which made him stronger. They also made Jin-Woo more aware of the cruel hunters who used people and would kill people. I would rate the characters 5/5. Going back to character, how about character development. Well, this story is a prime example of character development where Jin-Woo, the weakest hunter and grows into the strongest hunter. Where a naive hunter becomes a smarter hunter. I would also rate the character development 5/5, overall the score would be 5/5. Solo Leveling is a must-read webtoon, and you can read it at sololeveling.net, and it currently has over 100 chapters.
