Pinion Staff as Book Genres
In this editorial cartoon, I argue that we are being controlled by our phones and social media, spreading misinformation, and also serving as a distraction for us. To do this, I made specific rhetorical choices. One choice is the wage of phones. This choice shows that we are being slaves to it, getting consumed by what we see. This shows that social media controls people’s perception of what’s around them. Another choice is the message on the phone saying “Everything is fine” as well as the thumbs up right after that text. This uses sarcasm. The phrase “Everything is Fine” displayed on the phone screen is sarcastic, contradicting the reality in the background. Mocking misinformation and the way it can create false reassur- ance. The last choice is the disaster in the background, the fire, protesting, and destruction. This choice illustrates that lots of people can be bared to issues around because of their social media distractions contrasting between reality and the phone screen.

Hi my name is Kena Mj Anien! I am a sophomore at McKinley Highschool and this is my first year in The Pinion. I joined The Pinion because I thought it would be something fun to do and also cause I wanted to do something new for a change . My goal this year is to do my very best so I can be a good reporter/photographer for the pinion. I hope I can apply all the things that I learn in newswriting to my everyday life even if I’m not reporting.

Hi there guys, girls, and non-binary pals, I am Cheska Orias, Class of 2026. I love all things art which includes drawing, painting, writing, and crafting! I also love anything related to psychology or anthropology, especially those long video essays on a specific psychological topic, and I base a lot of my work on that. You’ll probably find some of my digital art on here, and on other staffers’ articles. This is my third year on The Pinion staff and I’m excited to be here once again. Topics you’ll find me writing about are mental health/psychology-related things and anything related to the arts!
