Fire by: Krisitn Cashore

Fire is the second book that Kristin Cashore wrote and its a prequel to her first novel Graceling. Fire, a stunningly beautiful creature is shunned by others because of her father’s notorious history. Being part monster made Fire irresistble to Monsters, because of her blood, and to other people because of her divine beauty. She is also capable of manipulating one’s mind if that person does not shield their thoughts. Although she does it for good, like manipulating people so they won’t hurt her or helping the king, Fire warns people to shield their mind from hers. Fire is a humble person that has a very defined sense of what is right and wrong. She is a compassionate, selfless person that would help anyone in their time of need. Her father Cansrel, was part monster and was known for being cold hearted. Monsters were creatures that literally roam around and attack the villagers there. Cansrel was the King’s right hand man, and although he was rude at some points he was well respected by the villagers. After Fire was born, Cansrel took her to one of his homes away from everyone else before any danger could befall her. He taught her all the tricks he knew, how to make one feel pain mentally, how to convince someone to do something they wouldn’t. Her power worked mentally unlike Katsa who had pure physical power. Wallowing in self pity, Cansrel decided to commit suicide. After her father died, Fire goes with a Prince, back into the grounds of which she stayed away from her whole life. Partly due to the fact that she knows that people there think lowly of her and because of her Father’s bad reputation. Of which she is determined to overcome and prove to the villagers that she is nothing like her father. Fire’s first act there in an attempt to win trust, she volunteered herself to the monster creating a diversion for the warriors. The Queen was grateful, seeing how that diversion saved her son’s life, the Prince that collected Fire. She was allowed to stay at the castle for as long as she liked. Of the Queen’s two sons, one of them absolutely adored her, this son was the King. He had taken his father’s place after he had died. The youngest son, the one Fire agreed to go back to the castle with, hates her because of Fire’s father. The resemblance of Cansrel in Fire creates a hateful world for Fire as everyone remembers whose daughter that was. There are some changes in this book but not a lot. For example, a main character in Graceling takes a role in this book Fire. The world that Fire lives in does not know what Graced are and does not know that the graced lives in a parallel universe to them. Over all, this book is as captivating as Graceling, if not more. This book, keeps you intrigued until the last page. It grabs your attention with a firm grip and does not let you go until the last page is flipped, and even then your thoughts are on the book.
