Graceling: by Kristin Cashore

In the book Graceling it’s as if you are right there beside them taking this amazing trip. It puts an interesting twist to medieval and love stories. It is an enjoyable book for boys and girls. Graceling, Kristin Cashore’s first novel, is about a young woman named Katsa who has a burden of killing, due to her “grace”. A grace is a special ability that you could be born with. People who are graced has 2 different colored eyes. Katsa’s uncle, King Randa, is the ruler of the Middluns; one of the many city’s in this book. He is a ruthless king that uses Katsa as a tool to annihilate all those who oppose him. After years of being treated like a pet by her uncle, Katsa decided to make a secret council and carries out missions to help others that are being unjustly ruled by the kings. One of her missions was to help an elder king escape after being kidnapped and held hostage by a different king. When rescuing the elder king she runs into Po. Po is lienid, a ethnicity in this book, as hawaiian is in our world. Katsa, breaks free of her uncle and goes on a journey with Po to look for his little cousin whom is in danger from her father. Po and Katsa end up going together on a journey that takes them through flying arrows and treacherous, freezing mountains. This book pertains to many things a teen might be going through in their life. For example finding one’s self and one’s purpose. The thing I like best about this book is the main character Katsa. Through and through she makes sacrifices and pulls through for her love ones like Po, Bitterblue who is Po’s cousin, Katsa’s cousin Raffin, and her trainer Oll. As the book progresses you see Katsa change in her ways, and learn more about herself and life. She begins to trust people, an ability that she never had before. And also she learns how to love others.
