Students win awards at the annual State Science Fair

Juniors Kirk Wei, Jerry Wu and Tina Li won special awards for their science fair projects in the last 55th Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair (HSSEF) held at the Hawaii Convention Center on April 2nd to the 4th.

The students received cash prizes for their projects. During the awards ceremony on April 4, Wei and Wu received 250 dollars from The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAC) Hawaii Chapter for their science fair project entitled, “The Nifty and Thrifty Solar Heater.”

Li on the other hand, won 75 dollars from the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) for her project, “The Effect of Angle and Size of the Triangular Blades in the Amount of Energy produced.”

Also, McKinley High School was acknowledged as a honorable mention after Moanalua High School for the Oahu District STEM Institutional Award for High Schools, that was held also at Hawaii Convention Center on April 5th, said Jossefin Rasay, Physics teacher.

Rasay and Osamu Ono, Chemistry teacher together with Wei, Wu and Li attended the STEM luncheon that day.
