During the Physics Olympics hosted on March 24 by McKinley High School, students from all over Oahu competed in a wide spectrum of Physics related competitions, turning the school library into an arena.

The challenges included a mouse trap racer contest in which teams designed racers powered by mousetraps to compete and the bridge contest in which competitors designed wooden bridges to support as much weight as possible

Mousetrap Racer competitor Michel Kim (11) said the event was “massive.”

She said, “So many people from all over the island came so we had fun competing and making new friends.”

Kim also noted that the Physics Olympics created a new type of relationship between the students and their teachers.

“We got to see a different side of them and it reminded me that teachers can have fun, too,” said Kim

“I can’t believe that Mr. Lee [physics teacher] ate so many Cheetos!”

The tournament also gave its participants a greater appreciation for physics.

“The games were super cool” said John Hua-Vo (11).

“People always think that science is boring, but it’s not because there’s so many things you can use it for and it can be really fun.”
