Pops in Asia: Red Velvet The ReVe Festival: Finale

Jullia Linn, reporter

Out of all of Red Velvet’s albums so far I would say that this album is the best. Red Velvet is a South Korean girl group under the company SM entertainment. Red Velvet is known for its 5 visuals and their three different types of album concepts they have; the red, the velvet, and ones that don’t fit those concepts. The red is more of a happy pop sound and the velvet has more of an r&b sound.

The first track of the album is ‘Psycho’ which I believe is the best track on the album. ‘Psycho’ was written by a Korean artist known as Kenzie. It sort of has this R&B feeling to the song. My interpretation of the song is the person that the song is about has a relationship with someone and they are questioning how they feel. People keep saying that their relationship is weird but even if people say that they still love each other. Even though they fight a lot but they eventually get along and that’s what makes her feel like a psycho because those feelings keep confusing her. My favorite part about the song is the pre-chorus because Wendy and Seulgi hit those high notes perfectly and it sounds so delicate. I would rate this song 10/10.

‘In & Out’ is also an R&B song. The chorus of the song is catchy and the group’s harmony sounds beautiful. ‘In & Out’ reminds me of one of Red Velvet’s other b-sidetrack to a different album called ‘Sunny Side Up!’ This song is about falling in and out of their love for each other, which explains the title of the song. I would rate this song 8/10.

The next track is ‘Remember Forever’, unlike the last two tracks this song is more of a ballad song. The song is about a summer romance and the memories they had together. But when summer is over they have to part ways and they feel like it was just a dream that they never want to forget. When they do part ways they hope they don’t forget each other and they promise that they will meet again. My favorite part of the song is the first line because it reminds me of one of my favorite songs from a different artist and that song being ‘Be With You’ from Fromis_9. I would rate this song 7/10.

The final track is the special track on the album; ‘La Rouge’. This song also gives me a bit of 60s vibes. I think this song is about having a crush on someone and how they want their crush to notice them and pay attention to them. My favorite part of the song has to be the last chorus of the song, the reason being that in all of the chorus that came before the last one they changed it up and added Wendy’s ad-libs in the background. I would rate this song 7/10.

My final thoughts are that even though Red Velvet is not an underrated group people need to check out their b-sides because usually the average listener would only listen to their title tracks and their b-sides are killing it right now so I don’t know what everyone is doing, to be honest. So, in conclusion, you should stan Red Velvet and listen to all of their songs.
