Picking Which Movie to Watch

Recently there has been new movies coming out in December which children and adults watch for entertainment in Hawaii. I hear from many of my friends and teachers at McKinley High School about what  movies they’ve watched or how good or how bad that movie was, etc. Even though I haven’t seen any of the new movies that came out, it seems that most  of the movies that have a rating of PG or PG-13 are the movies that both children and adults would watch more than the movies that have a rating of Rated-R.

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the top ten movies to watch in U.S. and Canadian theaters are:

  1. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” with $123 million. It is PG-13 and a fantasy/drama based movie and lasts two hours and 3 minutes. It is the sequel to “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and this movie tops the Box Office for the third consecutive weekend. The main cast in this movie are Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, etc. In the movie, Katniss destroys the Hunger games and goes to District 13 where President Coin tells her to be the symbol of rebellion, while at the same time she tries to save Peeta from the Capitol.
  2. “Big Hero 6” with $20.1 million. A PG Action/Comedy movie that lasts one hour and forty-eight minutes. This movie is part of Walt Disney’s Animated movies that include: Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt. In the movie, a robot named Baymax and a boy named Hiro Hamada become friends, later making a team of friends consisting of high-tech heroes.
  3. “Interstellar” with $15.1 million. It is a PG-13 Action/Mystery movie and two hours and forty-nine minutes long. The main cast is Matthew McConoughey, Anne Hathaway, etc. It is a science fiction story about a group of people, who go through a wormhole in order to find a planet that is a place where humans can live in.
  4. “Dumb and Dumber To” with $13.8 million. A PG-13 comedy movie that lasts one hour and fifty minutes. It is the sequel of “Dumb and Dumber” with the main cast: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Carly Craig, etc. This movie talks about Lloyd and Harry teaming up on a road trip in order to find Harry’s daughter that was given up for adoption.

The rest of the six movies of the list includes “Gone Girl” with $2.8 million, “Beyond the Lights” with $2.6 million, “St. Vincent” with $2.4 million, “Fury” with $1.9 million,  “Birdman”with $1.9 million, and “The Theory of Everything” with $1.5 million. The movie “Gone Girl” is a Rated-R movie that was adapted from: Gone Girl book by Gillian Plynn. This movie tells of a dark side of a relationship with a married couple by lies, betrayal, murder, deception, etc. Other Rated-R movies include “Fury” and “Birdman”, which may contain many adult language, sexual content, fantasy violence,, and violence. “Beyond the Lights” is a PG-13 movie, but does have a lot of suggestive language as well as for “St. Vincent” that may not be suitable for children to watch. “The Theory of Everything” tells about the biography of the meeting of Stephen Hawking and his wife and is PG-13 Drama/Romance movie.

From the list, I think that the top four movies would be good to watch because these are the most appropriate  to watch with children and adults, and also during the holiday season. Christmas is the time to have laughter and joy with family and friends, not have nightmares about people killing each other, or inappropriate parts of the movie that do not convey the Christmas cheer.
