Principal Ron Okamura said: “If my students asked me what they could do to graduate I would tell them to try their best, come to class on time, do all the bellwork and homework to pass their class and graduation high school.”

The Pinion interviewed Principal Ron Okamura on August 25. Many questions were given to the man who controls everything on this campus; questions such as “How long have you worked here,What are some of your favorite moments at this school ‘?’ and ‘Have you ever stepped on the oval?’” The interview was roughly an hour long and the atmosphere in the room was everything besides scary or intimidating. Okamura has an open door policy and loves talking to his students when he has free time.

During the interview Okamura said many things that were important and inspiring; he also talked about a saying that his coach used to tell him and Okamura lives by it to this day.

“Anything that I do right now, if I can look at myself in the eyes in the mirror after I have done it and say I did my very best I could have done, regardless of the outcome then it’s okay,” said Okamura.

A question which a reporter of The Pinion asked Okamura was about his high school life and what his hardest subject was at the time. The answer to that question was simply put as math.

If any of you reading have ever thought about what it’s like to be Okamura and how hard his job can be, well he answered that to. Okamura said that his job on a regular day is usually a 5 on his scale, but on some days like when we have lockdowns it turns to an absolute 10. For the people who thought it was all fun and games being the principal of a high school I would rethink that.

The interview was a fun look into how our principal sees things, a little about how his past was. The answers to the Pinion’s questions also ventured into Okamura’s room. If you have been into the room of our principal than I assume you have noticed that it kind of looked like a section of party city. When you step into his office, it’s cold but welcoming that it doesn’t look like what you would think a principal’s office is supposed to look like. TV shows and books describe principal offices as a cold place and wouldn’t ever want to be called to it, but Okamura’s office is unique in many ways. You will also see many things as you walk inside of it such as trophies, M&M figurines, pictures of his friends and families and even his own football helmets when he was in high school at Hilo.
